Generally speaking, fiber optical communication products with ferrule, such as optical fiber patch cords, optical fiber connectors, fiber optic adapters, optical fiber attenuators and so on, usually need to grind and polish the end face of the ferrule to obtain PC, UPC, APC end faces. What is the difference between the three types of end faces? What are their strengths and weaknesses?

"PC" is the most widely used in equipment of telecom operators. Its end face is flat. It is able to meet general requirement of return loss.

"UPC" is with smaller attenuation than "PC". It is generally used in equipment with special needs of return loss. For example, SC/UPC fiber patch cord is used with ODF, fiber patch panel, fiber terminal box and so on, mainly to improve the optical performance.

“APC” is widely used in radio and television and early CATV. The ferrule adopts an inclined end surface, which can improve the quality of TV signal. The main reason is that the TV signal is analog optical modulation. When the coupling surface of the joint is vertical, the reflected light returns along the original path. Because the non-uniform refractive index distribution of optical fibers will return to the coupling surface again, at this time, although the energy is very small, but the analog signal can not completely eliminate the noise, so it is equivalent to superimposing a weak signal with time delay on the original clear signal, which is shown in the picture as double image. The angle or slope of the fiber connector prevents the reflected light from returning along the original path. Generally, this problem does not exist in digital signals. APC end face are still widely used in today's radio and television communication and other occasions where there are higher requirements for return loss.
