Bending loss is the loss caused by bending of fiber shaft. Any visible optical axis shift in a straight line is called a curve or macro bend. Fiber bending will cause coupling between modes in the fiber, and when the energy of the propagating mode is coupled to the radiation mode or the leaky mode, bending loss will occur. The loss increases exponentially with the decrease of the radius of curvature. Another type of loss is the random displacement of the fiber axis, which is called the micro bending loss. The reason of micro bending is optical fiber has been suffered uneven side pressure or large longitudinal stress during coating,forming cable,adding sheath, and installation and so on, or because temperature expansion coefficient of optical fiber and coating layer or outer sheath are different.

Since optical transmission system is widely used in the access network, the installation environment has put forward higher requirements for the bending performance of the optical fiber. Therefore, the bending insensitive single-mode optical fiber has been born. ITU defines it as G657 fiber. Compared with ordinary single-mode fiber, it has a smaller bending radius and macro bending loss. So it is suitable for FTTH fiber to the home which is with many corners.

G657 fiber is divided into class A and class B. class A fiber is suitable for O, E, S, C and L band (that is, full band range from 1260nm to 1625nm). G675A fiber has the same transmission and interconnection characteristics as the G.652 fiber. Its advantage is improved the bending loss of optical fiber, so it can reduce the attenuation increasing caused by the small radius bending in the compact cabling space of FTTx applications. G657B type optical fiber is suitable for transmitting signals within a narrower space in building with limit distances and it works with 1310nm, 1550nm and 1625nm wavelengths. The G657 fiber is with characteristics different from G.652 fiber, but its smaller bending radius makes it can be cabling as indoor electronic wires.
